the COCKTAIL party

'Tis the season for festive fun!

Beyond the excitement of getting your besties together in one place, with the intent to catch up, get them fed and perhaps a bit tipsy - having a party is an awesome way to cut loose with those that matter most.

With some notice, there's always something beautiful and appropriately festive to be found at Anthropologie or J Crew. Start with a gorgeous shoe, then order a few dresses and a bunch of accessories to add sparkle. Returns are quite easy - having options for last-minute changes are key.

Try wrapping a wheel of brie in layers of filo and baking. A few small extras like fresh sliced pear and champagne cocktails make delicious treats. Ask your fancy friends to bring pie and some finger foods that are simple, pretty and tasty, to add variety to the nosh menu.

With such a busy year-round schedule, making room to see friends during the holidays is the perfect reset for the New Year.

Raymor Rosenthal-Netter Pottery in Blue Petal

Anyone can appreciate a good collection. From records to jewelry to paintings, I admire collections of all sorts. One is nice to have, two are happy to be partners, and when there are three, you finally have a budding collection.

My mother bought the vase and the planter for pops of color to add to the mid-century décor of her first home back in 1966. 40 years later, I came across the fruit bowl by chance, and begged Mom to gift me the other two pieces that ended up on the highest shelf in the furthest corner of her garage.

Lucky for me, Mom had no problem getting rid of the pieces I wanted, and thus began a collection of Rosenthal-Netter Pottery in Blue Petal.

By the way, Raymor was not an artist or a manufacture, (as sited by many online collectors) but rather an American distribution company who - from the 1950’s to the 1970’s - brought exceptionally beautiful works in ceramics and glass, by several Italian artists to American department stores near and wide. (Modern day Target business model?)

Mom got her pieces at the K-Mart in Ypsilanti, Michigan. The vase is marked $11.50. Though the planter's tag was scraped off partially, it still reads $18-something. The bowl was found in Idaho and picked for $68.00. All three pieces are now in Northern California.

Every now and then, I catch a glimpse of a Rosenthal-Netter piece in this pattern on a shelf or table in a photograph, but alas - I’ve not seen any on the market in quite some time.

If your mom has pieces matching these on the highest shelf in the furthest corner of her garage, hit me up – I’ll gladly take them off her hands.

The Restorative Power of The Nap

Most teenagers can sleep for 12 hours straight, no sweat. Starting around 40, sleep becomes a little harder to get.

Whether or not your circadian clock will allow for enough sleep over time, the fact remains that deprivation can weaken the immune system’s power to defend against virus & disease.

Adding a little extra rest during the day can limit vulnerability caused by sleepless nights, and add energy and clarity to the evening.

Breakup Advice from Grandma

“They’re all assholes,” she said.

I cried – flung across my bed. “He doesn’t like me and he asked Michelle to go to Great America!”

"Pick an asshole and grow old with him. Yes, honey - you can have a new boyfriend every year, but when will you stick with someone?

The first five years were us just getting to know one another. The next ten were about becoming a family. Relationships take work."

At 12, I assumed she had a sidecar for lunch. At 35, Grandma's breakup advice makes for good common sense.

Simple Fast Good

Elaborate rubs and marinades have their place but when it comes to chicken wings, if you have a charcoal grill, try limiting your preparation to just Lemon Pepper. You'll be pleasantly surprised at how delicious this 1-spice method is.

Sprinkle the chicken wings lightly with Lemon Pepper and let them sit for around 20 minutes while you tend to the grill

Get your charcoal going to a smolder

Arrange the wings on the grill

Cover partially

Turn frequently within a total cooking time of 15 to 20 minutes

These wings make great nosh, perfectly paired with beer and friends

How To Find The Right Tenant

Create a posting that throughly describes your rental, along with a complete list of your criteria for the right tenant.

When the replies from your ad come in, measure each person by the list of criteria, on a first-come-first-serve basis, and voila! The right tenant will magically appear before your eyes.

Here's a handy-dandy list of criteria to start

Able to afford the rent
Verify that your new tenant earns 2-3 times the amount of the rent per month by looking over recent pay stubs or bank statements.

Have steady income

Check current professional references and bank statements to be sure that your new tenant has a reliable revenue stream.

Pay their bills on time

Read every line of your new tenant’s credit report and evaluate their credit score to determine your new tenant’s level of risk.

Have good references

Call all of your new tenant’s references and find out how they are to live or work with, or what they’ve been like as a friend over the years.

A fit for the community

No pets allowed? 55 and over? Nudists? Make sure your new tenant is aware of the rules of the community and easily abides by them.

A clear communicator

Does your new tenant ignore your messages or show up unannounced? This is how your communication will go for your entire relationship. Make sure you and your new tenant communicate with ease.

Problem solved.
